Prairie Gold Guidelines

IMPORTANT: We have extended the deadline for this project to August 31, 2013 and have changed some of the requirements and deadlines. Please read the following document closely for directions for the submission process.

The Book Project:

Editors Lance Sacknoff and Xavier Cavazos have received acceptance of a proposal to produce an anthology composed of sharp, quality work in response to the Midwestern environment. The anthology will be open to submissions in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

The editors seek to work with authors that produce pieces responding to the landscape, culture, environment, and/or history the Midwestern states. Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas make up the Midwestern United States. The accepted works will be grouped into sections of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Fiction and Nonfiction pieces have a word cap of 4,000 words. Poems will be capped at a maximum of 5 submitted pieces per author.

In addition, Mary Swander, the Poet-Laureate of Iowa, will write an introduction for the poetry section. Debra Marquart, winner of the PEN USA Creative Nonfiction Award and author of The Horizontal World, will write an introduction for the nonfiction section. Finally, Dean Bakopoulos, winner of the 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship and author of My American Unhappiness, will write an introduction for the fiction section.

The anthology is currently slated to be published with Ice Cube Press, a Midwestern environmental publisher. Ice Cube Press publishes excellent work by outstanding authors, and the CEO, Steven Semken, has displayed considerable talent in editing and publicizing works akin to this anthology. https://www.icecubepress.com/ or find more on facebook, or via their twitter feed @icecubepress

Requirements:

1. A maximum word count of 4,000 words. Work over the word limit will not be immediately dismissed, but it makes acceptance more difficult.

2. “Midwestern environment/culture/landscape/history” as a theme should be obvious and accessible to a casual reader.

3. All work must be original and unpublished. Pieces currently under consideration for publication are not eligible for this anthology. Selected authors will be contacted by the editors.

Formats and Deadlines:

1. Authors may submit in two of the three possible categories: Nonfiction, Fiction, or Poetry.

2. Fiction and Nonfiction works have a maximum word count of 4,000 words. Poetry will be limited to a collection of 5 poems.

3. All submissions must have a cover sheet detailing the name of the author, the title of the work,  and the author’s contact information. Please keep cover sheets–whether attached or in the e-mail proper–professional and free from grammatical or spelling errors.

4. All submissions must be in a .doc, .docx, .rtf, .pdf, or other easily readable/accessible format.

5. All submissions will be e-mailed to [email protected]

6. Submissions will be accepted until no later than Saturday, August 31, 11:59 PM CST
