Mary Swander and Farmscape in the News

At the invitation of US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Mary Swander performed Farmscape as a one-woman show during a USDA retreat at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV. She received a standing ovation. Secretary Vilsack introduced Swander and offered commentary after she spoke about the project. Vilsack talked about his role as a lawyer during the Farm Crisis and how he had worked to keep farms from foreclosure. Members of the audience included the staff of the USDA.

As part of the Young Farmer’s Conference.  Mary Swander performed her verbatim play Farmscape: The Changing Rural Environment at Stone Barns Center (funded by the Rockefeller Foundation), one of the premier sustainable agriculture centers in the United States. Farmscape was directed by Dean Gray, founder of The New Dog Theatre in New York City.
